My tours

If you like personal attention & freedom and if you don't like the commercial tours and the stops at souvenirs shops I offer a solution: private tours from 1 - 4 persons in a comfortable full size 4wd. These tours go far beyond the normal commercial tours. I try to fulfill your wishes, additional it's possible that I hire  a very good, experienced and local guide to make this happen. Of course I can visit the Costa Rican highlights, but I like to visit the off the beaten path too. At my multiple day tours I only use good midclass hotels, upgrades are possible of course. I offer day trips out of Alajuela and of course for my guests. Below some examples:

One-day tours:

The Poás Volcano and the La Paz waterfall. The Poás Volcano  has one of the world's largest craters.

The Poás Volcano  and Sarchi. Sarchi is the production center of the famous painted ox carts.

The Irazu Volcano and/or the Orosi Valley. The Irazu is the world's highest drive-to volcano, more than 3400 meters.

San José, the capital. You can visit the Pre-Colombian Gold Museum, the National Theatre (one of the oldest buildings in San José) or The Pueblo Antigo Museum.

Multiple day tours:

There are various possibilities of tours to La Fortuna, we can visit the Poás , the La Paz Waterfall, a little zoo. We will be in La Fortuna around 4 pm. The next day we can visit El Silencio, a private park close to the Arenal volcano where you can hear the sounds of the volcano and where you can watch  many birds, like toucans and motmots, during the hike. Most of the time it is possible to see howler- and  spidermonkees too. The hanging bridges are another possibility and of course a visit to one of the hotsprings and if the weather permits in the evening a visit to a special place to see the red lava.

I offer a 2 or 3 day tour to visit the Irazu volcano, the Orosi valley and San Gerardo de Dota (Cerro de la Muerte, cold) to see the famous Quetzalbird. This is the best place in Costa Rica to see this wonderfull bird, where we will stay 1 or 2 nights.

My special tour to La Fortuna, Río Celeste and the Caño Negro

Early 2007 I developed a special 4 days tour to one of the most beautiful areas of Costa Rica: from the northern mountains ( Poás) of the Central Valley to the Nicaraguan border. Recently (September 19, 2007) is decided by UNESCO in Paris to make from this area a huge Biosphere Reserve (916.000 hectares), it's named Peace & Water (Paz y Agua in Spanish). At the picture below you can see how huge this area is: it includes Arenal NP, The Monteverde protected area, Tenorio NP, The Miravalles protected area, The Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge and it continues at the Nicaraguan side.
With the tour we will visit the main highlights of this area: Poás NP, a wildlife rescue center, the Arenal area, Tenorio NP and an early morning boattrip out of Los Chiles: the Caño Negro tour. Of course I can change details of this tour to fulfill special wishes. Since the earthquake at Chinchona (january 2009) the first day will be different.
